There was a time when a long menu felt generous.

More dishes. More cuisines. More reasons to keep turning the page.

Now, some of Mumbai’s most interesting restaurants are doing the opposite. Menus are getting shorter, formats more focused and kitchens increasingly comfortable telling you exactly what they want you to eat.

At Papa’s, there isn’t really a decision to make. The intimate 12-seat chef’s counter is built around a tasting menu, with the kitchen deciding how the evening unfolds. And perhaps that’s part of the appeal.

The same confidence is showing up in different ways across the city.

Naru Noodle Bar keeps the conversation centred around noodles in an intimate setting. Bandra Born has experimented with smaller tasting plates rather than building everything around conventional mains. And at Adam & Eve, even the cocktail programme works from a tightly edited set of hero ingredients.

None of these places are doing exactly the same thing. They’re simply getting more specific about what they want to be known for.

SO, IS LESS ACTUALLY MORE?

A shorter menu puts more pressure on every dish. There are fewer places to hide the forgettable ones. The kitchen has to make choices before the diner does, and that requires something restaurants haven’t always been comfortable with: a very clear point of view. For diners, it means giving up a little choice in exchange for something potentially more interesting: trusting the people who made the menu. And in a city where we’re constantly being asked to choose between more dishes, more restaurants and more things to try, perhaps the real luxury isn’t having endless options. It’s knowing you ordered the thing they do best.
