Some nights are about dinner. Some are about drinks. And then there are places where you don’t really have to choose. Hidden beneath Roswyn, Black Lacquer is a Japanese-inspired listening bar built around three things that work particularly well together: food, cocktails and really good music.
The vinyl might be what gets your attention first. But this isn’t somewhere you need to eat before you arrive.

START WITH THE TABLE
The food keeps close to the Japanese inspiration behind the room.
Rather than a traditional three-course dinner, the menu leans into bar plates made for ordering across the table. Yakitori comes off the grill, tempura brings the crunch and edamame inevitably disappears while everyone is still deciding what to order next.
It makes sense for the kind of evening Black Lacquer is trying to create. Order a few things. Add another plate. Get another round. Stay for another record.
This isn’t really dinner with somewhere to be afterwards.
THE JAPANESE INFLUENCE DOESN’T STOP AT THE KITCHEN
The same thinking carries into the drinks. Sake and shochu sit alongside cocktails that bring Japanese ingredients including yuzu, umeshu and cherry liqueur into the mix.
Highballs naturally have a place here too. The food and drinks don’t feel like two separate menus competing for attention. They’re built for the same kind of night: plates in the middle, drinks around them and enough time to order another of both.
THEN THE RECORD CHANGES
This is where Black Lacquer stops feeling like another Japanese-inspired bar.
The room takes its cues from Japan’s listening-bar culture, with a deep vinyl library and a serious sound system at its centre. Music moves across genres, and the energy shifts as the evening gets later.
So the vinyl isn’t there to make the shelves look good. You actually notice what is playing. And because the food is designed for sharing rather than following a rigid sequence, dinner moves at roughly the same pace as the room.

Black Lacquer opens at 5 PM and stays open until 1 AM Sunday through Thursday and 3 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
That might be the best way to understand the place.
Start with Japanese plates. Move into sake or cocktails. Let somebody put another record on. Realise it’s considerably later than you thought.
For once, you don’t need the inevitable “Where are we going after this?” conversation.

Mumbai has no shortage of bars with good music and restaurants with good drinks. Black Lacquer gets interesting because it doesn’t ask one of those things to play background to another. The food gets you to the table. The cocktails keep you there. The vinyl decides how late the night goes.
