There are certain things you expect to find covered in rhinestones. A phone case from 2007. A pair of festival sunglasses. Maybe something lurking at the bottom of your childhood jewellery box.

A matcha cup? Less expected.

And yet, here we are.

Bedazzling is having another very sparkly moment, and this time, practically anything with a surface is being considered for the treatment.

IT STARTED WITH A CAKE.

For her 29th birthday, Kylie Jenner had a cake decorated with peel-and-stick gems. Not edible crystals. Actual craft-store-style rhinestones stuck onto the frosting.

Naturally, the internet noticed.

Soon, gems were appearing across laptops, headphones, beauty products, cups, accessories and increasingly ambitious DIY projects. The appeal is fairly simple: take something ordinary, add an unreasonable number of rhinestones and suddenly it feels completely your own.

And while Kylie’s cake gave the trend a very 2026 push, our relationship with sticking shiny things onto other things goes back much further.

WE’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE.

The original Bedazzler arrived in the 1970s, giving people the ability to stud and decorate their clothes at home. By the ’90s, rave and club culture had moved gems onto faces and bodies.

Then came the 2000s, when subtlety was hardly the brief.

Mariah Carey wore stick-on butterflies. Christina Aguilera embraced crystal-covered beauty looks. Rhinestones appeared on denim, handbags, phones and just about every accessory that could survive a glue gun.

Eventually, we moved on. Or thought we did.

SPARKLE HAS ENTERED ITS REBRAND.

The latest version feels a little different.

Sabrina Carpenter and Dua Lipa have brought gems to their manicures. Kylie Jenner has worn rhinestones at Coachella. And sparkle has made its way back onto the Fall 2026 runways too. But perhaps the most interesting part is where bedazzling is happening away from fashion.

The internet is decorating the everyday now. Your water bottle can have a personality. Your headphones can match your nails. Your laptop can look like it has somewhere considerably more exciting to be than a Monday meeting.

Same obsession. Better adhesive.

MAYBE BEIGE FINALLY GOT BORING.

There’s also something about the timing that makes perfect sense.

We’ve spent years surrounded by quiet luxury, neutral interiors, clean beauty, barely-there manicures and objects designed to look tastefully expensive.

Bedazzling is basically the opposite.

It is excessive. A little silly. Entirely unnecessary. And refreshingly uninterested in looking restrained.

It also taps into a larger return to personalisation. Instead of owning exactly the same pristine object as everyone else, adding charms, stickers, gems and decorations makes mass-produced things feel a little more individual.

Even if that individuality involves covering your coffee cup in rhinestones.
