You know the post. Someone announces that your favourite restaurant is painfully overrated. Someone has a dating opinion so terrible you physically cannot scroll past it. Someone says something about fashion that makes you wonder whether they’ve ever actually seen clothes before. You stop. You read. Maybe you comment. More likely, you send it to someone with a “Thoughts?”

Congratulations. You took the bait.

YOU WERE ALWAYS SUPPOSED TO DISAGREE.

Rage bait works because it isn’t necessarily trying to convince you of anything. It wants a reaction. The opinion gets more absolute. The take gets slightly more ridiculous. Nuance conveniently disappears. And suddenly the comments are full of strangers explaining, arguing and tagging their friends. The algorithm doesn’t particularly care whether you loved the post or hated it.

It noticed that you stopped scrolling. And somewhere along the way, we figured out that outrage was surprisingly shareable.

THEN IT LEFT THE COMMENTS.

This is where things get more interesting. Rage bait isn’t only something we argue with publicly anymore. It has quietly become something we send to each other. Why open with “hey” when you can send a Reel followed by:

“Thoughts?”

“You better not agree with this.”

Or the particularly threatening:

“This has your name all over it.”

The post does the awkward introductory work for you. Suddenly there’s something to debate, defend or dramatically disagree about before either person has had to think of an actual conversation starter.

Twenty-seven messages later, nobody even remembers the original Reel.

The rage was optional. The conversation was the point.

AND OF COURSE, THE BRANDS NOTICED.

If people are arguing, people are engaging.

Marketers figured out what the algorithm already knew: agreement might make people nod and keep scrolling. Disagreement makes them stop.

So the opinion gets bolder. The caption becomes more provocative. The comments start fighting amongst themselves. You might hate the take, send it to three friends and spend the next hour complaining about it. Which, unfortunately, is excellent engagement.

The smartest rage bait often sits just inside the line of plausibility. Ridiculous enough to annoy you, believable enough that you aren’t entirely sure whether the person means it. And that uncertainty is usually where the fun begins.

STILL THINK YOU DIDN’T TAKE THE BAIT?

You stopped.

You read it.

You sent it to someone.

Maybe you even started drafting a response before deciding it wasn’t worth your energy which still required considerably more energy than simply scrolling past. That’s what makes rage bait so perfectly suited to the internet we have now. Attention is the currency, and disagreement is very good at earning it. But somewhere between the comments section and the group chat, we made it social too. A ridiculous opinion became something to send a friend. A bad take became an icebreaker. An argument became entertainment.

And now you’ve read an entire article about it. So, technically, you took the bait again.
