If your H&M wishlist has been feeling a little too sensible lately, that’s about to change. Elie Saab is bringing his particular brand of red-carpet glamour to the high street this fall. The Lebanese couturier is collaborating with H&M on a collection spanning womenswear, menswear, accessories and footwear, taking the codes that have made his name synonymous with occasion dressing and giving them a much wider wardrobe.

And, thankfully, nobody appears to be asking Saab to tone things down.

EXPECT THE FULL ELIE SAAB TREATMENT

Think embellished gowns, shimmering separates and sharply cut tailoring, with fine lace, gradient sequins and monogram details worked throughout the collection. In other words, this isn’t the collaboration you buy for another very useful white T-shirt. It’s for the birthday dinner, the wedding after-party, the cocktail invitation you haven’t received yet but are now strangely prepared for, and any other occasion where arriving unnoticed isn’t particularly important.

FROM BEIRUT TO H&M

Saab founded his house in Beirut and built an international reputation around the kind of gowns that tend to come with photographers attached. His designs have become fixtures on red carpets and couture calendars, recognisable for their intricate embellishment, feminine silhouettes and unapologetic approach to glamour. The H&M collaboration takes that vocabulary somewhere considerably more accessible. Rather than simply reproducing couture at a lower price point, the interesting part will be seeing how those signatures translate into clothes designed for a much broader audience.

SO, WHAT ARE WE EYEING?

The embellished pieces, obviously. But the tailoring could prove to be the sleeper hit. Against all that shimmer, sharply constructed separates offer a way into the collection for anyone whose personal dress code doesn’t usually involve floor-length sequins. Then there are the accessories and footwear, which may well become the easiest way to buy into the collaboration without requiring an occasion at all. Although, to be fair, buying the dress first and finding somewhere to wear it later has never stopped us before.
